The importance of establishing healthy boundaries

What are boundaries?

In relationships boundaries are often defined as the line that indicates where one person ends and the other person begins.  People with healthy boundaries have developed an identity separate and distinct from others and are not dependent upon others to nurture their personal and spiritual growth.

Boundaries are the foundation of good communication.  Setting boundaries is about taking care of ourselves.  Having healthy boundaries simplifies ones life.

Characteristics of healthy boundaries:


*You can say no or yes, and you are okay when others say no to you.


*You have a strong sense of identity.  You respect yourself.


*You expect reciprocity in a relationship.  You share responsibility and power.


*You know when the problem is yours and when it belongs to someone else.


*You share personal information gradually in a mutually sharing and trusting relationship.


*You don't tolerate abuse or disrespect.


*You know your own wants and needs and feelings.  You communicate them clearly in your relationships.


*You are committed to and responsible for exploring and nurturing your full potential.

*You are responsible for your own happiness and fulfillment.

*You allow others to be responsible for their own happiness and fulfillment.

*You value your opinions and feelings as much as others.

*You know your limits.  You allow others to define their limits.

*You are able to ask for help when you need it.

*You don't compromise your values or integrity to avoid rejection.

If you fall down get up and try again

Grab a journal or piece of paper and start writing about a goal you tried to achieve in the past.  Write about how you feel and think right now about this unaccomplished goal.  Read what you have written than put it aside to reflect on at a later date.

Test yourself.  Pick one small goal to work on that you tried to achieve in the past.  Make a plan, follow it through, and give yourself a date to complete the goal.

Once you have successfully completed your goal.  Journal about how your feel and think after accomplishing your goal.  Reflect on what you have written.

What are the positive results?

Challenge yourself and work hard to accomplish what ever task, test, or obstacle that you have found hard or challenging to overcome.  The success and positive energy you will get when you finally achieve your goal is worth more than the achievement itself.

Are you controlling your time or is time controlling you?

Time management is a skill and like anything else needs to be planned and practiced.

What is time management?

By definition time management is the act or process of exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase efficiency or productivity.

What can time management do for you?

-help you meet your goals?
-help you gain control of  your life
-help you achieve greater productivity
-help you increase your confidence
-help give you more time to include fun in your life
-help decrease the stress level in your life

There are many strageties and techniques to time management.  Below are some simple steps to start applying time management to your life.

1) Figure out what you need to get done.  Make a list.

2) Look at your list and prioritize it.  Write # 1 by the first task, # 2 by the second task, and # 3 by the third task etc.......

3) Structure your day.  Use an agenda or any other method to write down when and at what time you will work on your tasks.  Estimate the amount of time you will need to complete each task.

4) Apply yourself.  No procrasination.  Just do it as Nike says and you will find that in time you will become more accomplished, productive, and have time for fun and other important things in your life.

* Don"t forget to get enough rest and have fun.  It is good to get things done, but balance is always the key.

*Remember time cannot be replaced so learn to value it and make the most of it.

How balanced is your life?

 
Try this exercise to discover how balanced your life is
Take a piece of paper and draw a big circle.  Now divide the circle into 10 equal pieces. Label each piece of the pie with one of the following headings.  Label every piece of the pie making sure that each piece has a different heading.
Significant other (romance)
Spiritual
Career
Finances
Health and Fitness
Physical Environment/ Possessions
Fun/ Recreation/ Self care
Personal development/ Education
Friends/ Community
Family
To complete the exercise you will need 10 different coloured pencil crayons.  Think about each heading of your pie and shade it in to represent how satisfied you are with each aspect of your life.  For example if you are 100% satisfied with your career shade in the whole piece of pie labelled career.
The circle (whole pie) represents your entire life.  Each piece of the pie is a part of your life.
When you are done coloring the pieces of your pie reflect on your new discovery.

Are you the driver or the passenger in your life?

Life is like driving a car.  You can be the driver or the passenger.  When you jump into your car one usually has a destination.  The object is generally to get from point A to point B.

So where are you in your life?


Point A is where you are now

Point B is where you want to go

In order to get to point B you need a plan.

The formula is pretty simple

(GOAL) +(PLAN) + (IMPLEMENT THE PLAN) + (FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THE PLAN) + (PERSISTENCE) = (GOAL ACHIEVED)

Are you applying this formula to your life?

Try it out.  Pick a small, simple, and achievable goal to work on.  Make a plan and a timeline to complete it.  Follow through with your plan and don't give up. Enjoy the fruits of your labour and continue achieving your goals.  Think of this process as a game.  Are you winning and having fun at the same time?

One step at a time and you will achieve great results.

Everyday is Valentine's Day

How to celebrate Valentine's Day everyday:

1) Grab a journal and start writing down all the things you can do for yourself to show yourself love.
Read what you have written.

2) When you are done start writing down all the things you can do to show other people love.
Read what you have written.

3) Do one loving thing for yourself and someone else everyday for the next 7 days; make sure to journal about your experience(s).

 4) After 7 days have passed read about your 7 days of experience displaying acts of love towards yourself and others.

5) Reflect on this experience.  What are your feelings and thoughts?

6) What are the benefits of loving yourself and others?

*Celebrate your love for yourself and others everyday.  You don't have to wait for valentines day.

Challenge your thoughts

Have you ever spent the day keeping track of your thoughts?


Here is an exercise to check out how negative or positive your thoughts are. 

What you willl need:

A journal, pen, or pencil, a watch or timer, and some time.

Directions:

1) As soon as you wake up record your first thought(s); then continue your day and record 1 to 3 thoughts every hour during a 5 hour period.

2) When 5 hours has passed look at your journal where you recorded your thoughts.  Were most of your thoughts negative, positive, or a mixture of both?

3) Rewrite the negative thoughts into positive thoughts.

* Next time you process a thought be conscious of what you are thinking and change each negative thought into a positive thought.

* You will find in time that you will become a more positive person and will eventually begin to see the positive side in every situation.

It makes for a happier life.

What are you waiting for?  Experiment with yourself and give it a try.  You have nothing to loose and everything to gain.  The best part is that it is absolutely FREE.

Reflecting on Life

Although life can be challenging and not always fun, I hope you have something to smile about or at least laugh about.  Happiness and love are two things most people yearn for and yet find so unattainable.

Happiness is defined on an individual bases and only you know exactly what makes you happy.  Look around you and find something to be grateful about.  Focus on the positive things and find out ways to change negative situations into positive situations.  Take the first step no matter how scary it can be.  It is only when plans are put into action does a change occur.

If you want to attract love practive giving love.  If you believe in the law or attraction then the love you give with eventually return to you.

Have a happy heart, laugh, and smile.    Contain your problems and don't let them control your life.

After all isn't being given the gift of life enough already?

You are in control of your life.  So where do you want to go?  What do you want to achieve?  What is your purpose in life?

Take a deep breath and just relax.  Everything will be okay.

Rest well.  Tomorrow is another day.  Make the most of it.

The Benefits of Exercise

The Benefits of Exercising

Exercise is one of the most essential activities to incorporate into your life.  The benefits are endless including improved emotional, mental, and physical health.  Experts suggest getting at least 30 minutes of exercise a day.  Make exercise fun.  Mix it up and make it a sociable activity if you like.  You will feel better and your body will thank you.
Here are some suggested sports activities to get you going:
*Nothing beats a nice walk.  Walk with a friend, dog, or alone.  Incorporate it into your day to make the most of your time.  Walk to work, the grocery store, to run errands, or walk up the stair when you can.
*Do you like water?  Swimming is one of the most relaxing sports and it’s easy on the body.  Do some laps or take part in an aqua-fit class.
*Is your bike just sitting in the corner collecting dust?  Bike to the grocery store, run errands, meet a friend, bike around the sea wall, or make it a social activity.
*Go to an aerobics class.  Aerobics can be fun.  Why not exercise to the sound of music and meet some people along the way.
*How about a yoga class?  Yoga is a great way to meditate, release stress, and stretch that body all at the same time.  You could also make some friends at the same time.
Group sports are always a hit.  Pick up that tennis racket or head to the nearest gym for a game of badminton.
Want a little competition?  Call up some friends, stop by the park, or join a group for a game of basketball.  I guarantee you will be so engaged in the game you won’t even know you are exercising.
Feeling lonely?  Join a dance class.  You might meet someone special along the way.

Nurturing relationships

Relationships take time, effort, work, and maintenance.  They can be so rewarding and challenging at times.  Having healthy relationships is so important to ones mental and emotional health.  You get what you give.  Choice your friends carefully.  People can not be changes so be ready to accept your friends and loved ones as they are.  Be ready to work on personal and interpersonal issues.  Enjoy the happy and cherished times and be ready to walk away when it doesn't work.

Focus on the positive things you see and accept the imperfections in others.

Are you controlling your finances or are your finances controlling you?

Do you have a buget?

Are you aware of your income and expenses?

Pay yourself first.  Get your debts paid and start creating savings or building your RRSP.  Make your money work for you.  Don't be a slave to debt.

It's all about control and discipline.  Do you have limits?  Are you making enough money?  Live within your means.

Nobody wants to wear dirty underwear every single day so why would you want to live with heaps of debt?  It just drags you down, causes stress, and mentally preoccupies the mind.  Live happier and lighter.

Ask yourself what you really need verses what you think you want?

Instant gratification doesn't last long.  What is going to make you happy in the long run?  The new car or the peace of mind that you are financially sound?

Just relax

It is important to take time out just to relax.  Life can get so busy, don't forget to slow down. 

If you had a day off just to yourself what would you do?  What would the benefits be?  How would you feel?

Remember life is all about balance.  Stress can be deadly and so can procrasination.  Have you found a delicate balance?

Don't forget to breath.  You can afford to take a break.   Sometimes it's all you need to recharge those batteries.

The power of networking in a competitive job market

Todays job market is competitive. 

Do you know the power of networking? 

How many of you have jobs today that you got through a friend, family member, or other related contact?

It's not always about what you know or even how much work experience you have.  Sometimes it's about who you know.  Every social interaction you have could lead to a potential job lead or an exciting new career.

Always make a good impression and never burn bridges.  Word of mouth advertising is powerful.  It can make you or break you so use it to your advantage.

Your new job could just be around the corner.

There are a lot of benefits when it comes to having a balanced social life. Yesterday I meet a friend and had some dinner and watched a movie. I had a good time socializing, connecting, and escaping. My mood improved and so did my energy. It is good to relax and enjoy life sometimes, all in moderation.

Are your enjoying life?

When was the last time you sat down and said to yourself "  I had a great day today"

When was the last time you laughted until you started to cry?

Are you having fun?

Are you socializing with family and friends?

Do you enjoy your job?

How is your financial situation?

All of the above questions are related to your happiness.  One thing affects another like in the game dominos.  Living a happy and balanced life is like keeping the equilibrium in an aquarium.

If you are not enjoying life and simply going through the motions you better put on the breaks and ask yourself what you are doing in your life.

Do you love your job?

How many of you wake up every morning excited to go to work?  Do you find your day at work fulfilling?  Are you using your natural talents? Are you happy to be at work?

Grab a piece of paper and a pen and start journaling.

Here is your topic.

If I could do anything in the world and money was not an issue what would you be doing?

Journal and then read what you have written.  Does it make sense?  Have you discovered something about yourself that you were not aware of?  Reflect on your thoughts and see where it takes you.

*Remember it is never to late to change careers. You are living for yourself at the end of the day.

What is Self Care?

Self care refers to taking care of yourself.  Imagine you are a car.  Cars need maintenance and repair and so do you.   Ask yourself the following questions?

Do you get enough sleep?

Are you exercising daily?

Are you eating healthy?

Do you socialize enough?

How do you combat stress?

How is your financial situation?
What are you doing to take care of yourself?


TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF IS APART OF SELF LOVE.

Reconnecting

I have reconnected with an old friend.  It does not really matter what we fought about, all that matters is that we can connect again and distance ourselves from the black hole of loneliness. 

The more connections you make in life, the less lonely it will be.  There is no reason to be lonely.  There are so many people in this world so why are so many of us walking around with that awful hollow feeling inside?
Reach out to a friend, reach out to a stranger.  Make connections all day and every day.  Do this and you are one step closer to love.  We all live in this world together so why not make it a more positive experience?

Love is everywhere.  Just look around, open your heart and be ready to give and receive.  If everyone on this planet decided to do one loving act of kindness a day there would be hearts everywhere.

As they say know they neighbor as oneself.

Have you made goals for 2011?

It is a new year.  It's time for renewal, change, challenges, excitment, new experiences, fun, and personal growth.  You can do what ever you want, be who ever you want to be.  The world is your oyster if you choose to see it that way.  Are you living the life you want?  If not, ask yourself why not?  What can you do to make your life better right now?  What is it going to take? What is your passion?  What inspires you?  What is your natural internal motivation?  Do you like your job?  Are your relationships meeting your needs?  How is your health?  How is your financial situation? Are you enjoying your life?  Are you challenging yourself?  Are you having fun?  Are you living in the present?  Have you made meaningful connections?  Do you have a purpose in life?  The most important question is ARE YOU HAPPY?  If not what are you going to do about it?
